The crème de la crème of the art world descended on the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Lacma) last month for one of the starriest nights in the art calendar—the fabled Art+Film Gala. More than 650 guests, including the artists Catherine Opie and Tacita Dean, turned up and paid tribute to the Light and Space artist Helen Pashgian, boogying the night away to a DJ set by Derrick “D-Nice” Jones. The pop star Billie Eilish turned up head-to-toe in Gucci (the party sponsor, naturally). According to a statement from the museum, “this year’s gala raised $5.1m to support Lacma’s efforts to make film more central to the museum’s curatorial programming, as well as Lacma’s broader mission”. Lacma also announced that the $750m fundraising campaign for its new Peter Zumthor-designed building—known as the David Geffen Galleries—has reached the $700m mark. The City of Angels sure does look after its own.
