Anish Kapoor has condemned Narendra Modi, the member of India’s opposition Bharatiya Janata Party who is widely expected to be the country’s next prime minister once voting closes in the ongoing general election. The artist told the BBC that voters should not forget that Modi was a Hindu nationalist who was “at the very least associated with the terrible riots” in 2002 in Gujarat, the state where Modi is chief minister. The riots led to the deaths of hundreds, possibly thousands, of Muslims.
